Do I need to pass my theory test before starting lessons?

No. You can if you want to, but it’s generally considered better to have some driving lessons before taking your theory test. That way, your driving instructor can offer help and advice.

Can you help me to pass the theory test?

Of course! All of Owl Driving School‘s students get free access to the best theory test practice site out there.

How do I book my driving test?

Click here, but make sure you’ve discussed it with your driving instructor first!

How many lessons will I need to pass my test?

That’s a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question! It’s really impossible to say for sure. The only advice I can really give is to point to a study carried out in 2008 by the Department for Transport which found that learners needed, on average, 47 hours of lessons and 22 hours of private practice before passing their driving test.

Bored? Can’t sleep? Read the study!

Do I have to have a minimum number of lessons?

No. You don’t need to take a single hour lesson with a driving instructor (or anyone else) before taking your test. I wouldn’t advise it as being a good idea though. But then I would say that wouldn’t I! If you do try it search for ‘life insurance’ first.

Can I practice with family or friends between lessons?

Sure you can, but there are rules! The supervising driver must be over 21, have held a full licence for at least 3 years, and be qualified to drive the vehicle you’re practising in. And you’ll need to be insured to drive the car. More info here

How long is the driving test?

About 40 minutes, and it’ll fly by! More info here

What car will I be driving in the test?

Usually you use your driving instructor‘s car, but you can do the test in your own car so long as it meets the rules

Note that the examiner will not provide a car under any circumstances!

Can you guarantee I'll pass?

No, that would be silly. The only person that can guarantee a pass is you, you’ll be the one driving. Drive safely and you’ll pass.

Can I have more than one lesson a week?

Sure you can.

How long are lessons?

How long would you like them to be? Generally I find 2 hour lessons offer the best value, but you could have an hour lesson, a 90 minute lesson, a 2 hour lesson or even a 2½ hour lesson. It’s up to you.

Will my instructor shout at me?

Not unless you pay extra.

I'm not one of your students but, I have my test tomorrow and my instructor has let me down/dropped down dead/run away to Brazil can I use your car?

You’re looking for a car hire company, not a driving school. Try Arnold Clark, they hire out dual-controlled vehicles.
